From Adversity to Advocacy

Penina's Journey with Cradle of Resilience
← Back to Success Stories

Penina smiling Growing up in Tanzania, life for Penina Kadalida and her siblings was a daily battle for survival. Raised by a single mother with no financial means, she often went without food, relying on unripe papayas boiled to stave off hunger. Shoes were a luxury she and her siblings could not afford, and scavenging for food became a harsh reality. At just 11 years old, Penina began braiding hair to help feed her family of eight. Working alongside her mother in the fields, she harvested crops in exchange for food, all while shielding herself and her sisters from the societal pressures that sought to strip them of their autonomy.

From an early age, Penina fought not just for her own future but for the futures of her sisters. She stood firm, ensuring none of them were forced into early marriages or subjected to harmful traditional practices. Despite sleeping on bare floors and enduring some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, she refused to give up hope.

"When Cradle of Resilience came to mind, I knew it would become a force for change—uplifting silenced voices, breaking barriers, and forging paths to education, autonomy, and dignity for every girl and woman."

Education became her lifeline, though the path was anything but easy. In secondary school, she braided her teachers' hair on weekends and cut her classmates’ hair just to afford school supplies and boarding fees. Even then, she faced exploitation from individuals who sought to take advantage of her vulnerability, offering financial assistance in exchange for things she refused to compromise. Staying true to her values meant missing school at times, but she remained determined to persevere.

Her resilience led her to the University of Dar es Salaam, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts and then a Master of Arts in Archaeology. With a Master’s degree, she secured employment as an Assistant Lecturer, but her struggles were far from over. In academia, she encountered gender-based discrimination and harassment, yet she refused to compromise her integrity. Her determination to create change only strengthened.

After attracting the attention of international scholars, Penina was admitted to the Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota, where she made groundbreaking contributions to evolutionary Anthropology and biology.

And yet, against all odds, she has excelled. She has published two journal articles, presented at numerous national and international conferences, conducted fieldwork in Kenya and Tanzania, and received the prestigious Baldwin and Wenner-Gren Fellowships.

Penina’s journey of perseverance and resistance laid the foundation for Cradle of Resilience, an organization dedicated to uplifting women and girls facing similar struggles. She understands firsthand the structural barriers that prevent women from succeeding and has committed herself to mentorship, advocacy, and community-building. Through Cradle of Resilience, she provides a platform where women and girls can share their experiences, access resources, and find the support they need to break cycles of oppression.

Her mission is clear: to ensure that women and girls can pursue their dreams without being held back by societal constraints, harmful practices, or economic hardship. Through education, mentorship, and advocacy, Cradle of Resilience is building a future where every woman and girl can thrive.

Penina’s story is not just one of survival—it is a story of transformation, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of a better future. She has not only overcome incredible adversity but has used her experiences to uplift others. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact that one determined individual can have on the world.

At Cradle of Resilience, we believe that every struggle can be turned into strength. Penina’s journey proves that no circumstance is insurmountable and that through unity, perseverance, and education, we can create lasting change. Her story is a beacon of hope for all women and girls fighting for their place in the world.

Together, we are building a future where resilience is not just a necessity but a shared strength that lifts us all. "My journey has come full circle," Penina reflects. "From being a vulnerable girl to now leading the organization that saved me - this is the power of resilience and opportunity."
