From Adversity to Advocacy

Monica's Journey with Cradle of Resilience
← Back to Success Stories

Monica Image Growing up in a small household led by my single mother, life was far from easy. We didn’t have enough food to eat most days, and our home had no proper bedding—I often slept on the floor, dreaming of a better future but unsure if it would ever come. Despite these struggles, my sisters were my guiding lights, sacrificing everything to give me a chance at a better life.

When I was still young, the pressure to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) loomed over me. It was a practice deeply ingrained in my community, but my sisters refused to let it define my future. They risked everything to protect me, even when it meant defying family members who were determined to enforce it.

The threats became so severe that my sisters had to change my name to Neema, which means "grace," and move me to safety. It was a terrifying time, but I was surrounded by their unwavering love and strength. They worked tirelessly, braiding and cutting hair, fetching water at people’s homes, and doing whatever it took to make enough money to provide for me. They became my parents in every sense of the word, ensuring I had what I needed to attend school and pursue my dreams.

In primary school, I worked hard to honor their sacrifices. In secondary school, I excelled academically, and with every step forward, I felt the weight of their love and support pushing me to succeed. In November 2024, I achieved something I once thought impossible—I was accepted into the University of Dodoma in Tanzania to study for a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology.

Today, I am not just a university student; I am also a leader among my peers, inspired by my sisters' resilience and determination. Their sacrifices remind me every day that, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, there is a path to success through courage, perseverance, and education.

My story is a testament to the strength of women and the power of support. Through their efforts, my sisters have shown me that no obstacle is insurmountable. They’ve not only changed my life but inspired me to help others and work toward a brighter future for those who face similar struggles.
